Boy looking at screen of earth

You are here because, for whatever reason, traditional brick-and-mortar public school isn't working for you or your student.

The good news? More than ever before, families have great options and choices when it comes to their educations. In Alaska, statewide homeschool programs abound. These suit families with a parent or guardian able to take on the responsibility of homeschooling. Check out our homeschool correspondence program if you think this is the right choice for you.

With so many homeschool programs available, why choose Chatham Virtual School instead?

Homeschool requires a parent or guardian that has enough free hours to teach. The school district provides resources and support, as well as a curricular allotment to pay for supplies and outside classes. This allotment seems enormous, and in deed it is generous, as long as you have the time and resources to take on the job of teaching your student full time.

The other problem that often comes up with homeschool programs is that, as students get to upper grade levels, or if a student is especially challenged in an area, the parent no longer feels comfortable teaching the content of the course. Homeschool allotments are enough to cover a teacher for one or two classes, but the allotment will not be enough to cover teacher-led courses in most or all subjects.

This is where CVS is different. CVS is also a distance program, but it provides a variety of dynamic online classes that include a certified teacher. The value of these classes is higher than the homeschool allotment. Alaskan students attend our school free of charge, with the flexibility and freedom that comes with working from home. If you need an alternative to in-person schooling, but do not have a parent or guardian who can oversee the content for your coursework, CVS is a great fit.

CVS works well for:

  • Students who are looking for an alternative to traditional brick-and-mortar school
  • Students whose parents/guardians don’t have the time to take on the role of the homeschool teacher
  • Middle and High School students in need of rigorous, academically-challenging courses beyond a parent/guardian's teaching ability
  • Families whose lifestyle doesn't work with in-person education but who do not feel comfortable taking on the full responsibility of homeschool
  • Students who need more rigor than the traditional brick-and-mortar school offers
  • Students in need of grade recovery courses

Also, because we run both a homeschool program and a virtual school, it is possible to create a hybrid class schedule for your student.
